Annual Report
University Visual Arts Committee
2000-2001

Meetings

The University Visual Arts Committee meetings were scheduled monthly during the 2000-2001 school year. During these sessions the routine business of the committee was addressed and future projects planned. Several subcommittee meetings were also scheduled on an as needed basis.

Installations

This was a very productive year for installations. Our first outdoor sculpture was installed in cooperation with the graduating class of 2000. The sculpture was installed on the east side of Stanley Coulter Hall in the grassy area near the walking mall. And one new commissioned art piece was introduced to the Art in the Classroom collection during the year. An oil painting by Jerry Linton was installed in AT 214. We have purchased three student works and plan for there installation early next year.

New proposals

The committee has decided to place a new emphasis on installation of art in more "public" space. The outdoor sculpture is a fine example. We hope to bring the art to a more accessible location through installation of more works in foyers, hallways, and stairways. We have also been working closely with the university architectural group on a proposal for an outdoor sculpture garden. This proposal should go to the presidentĘs capital improvement committee very soon. We have also put together an additional sculpture proposal for an installation near Picket Park or Potter Library.

Poster Collection

The poster collection is alive and well. The poster exchange is was held last October and faculty and staff exchanged several hundred posters. The permanent poster collection has also grown in various buildings on campus. Thanks to the help of Marian Delp, the poster collection has been revitalized and many of the neglected posters on campus have been replaces or refurbished.

Other projects

The committee has spent considerable time on three other projects this year:
  1. UVAC web site (http://www.purdue.edu/VAC/)
  2. the documentation and archiving of the committees records
  3. the development of a strategic plan for the committee
Each of these projects is monumental and will most likely be an ongoing task. This year there was a real push by the committee to get a great foundation for these three issues. Please visit the web site.

Future Plans

The committee's goals are to continue to install art in various classrooms and other public space on campus. There will most likely be an emphasis on installations in common spaces, a move to "outside" the classroom. The committee plans to pursue the outdoor sculpture garden concept and work with the Center for Advancement to help secure funds for such activities.

Funding

This year the general allocations ($3,730) were supplemented by funds from the Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs ($4,750). Once again the committee would like to thank Dr. Ringel for his support. The poster collection activities have been supplemented by PEP donations. The poster installations have been done on a cost-sharing basis whenever requested by a particular department. We are always looking for cost sharing to purchase art such as the class of 2000 sculpture.

The committee will have spent (or have allocated) virtually all this years funds by the end of this fiscal year.
