ANNUAL REPORT
VISUAL ARTS COMMITTEE
1993-1994

Meetings

The University Visual Arts committee held seven regular meetings during the year. In addition, a tour of several of the Art in the Classroom sites was held on Saturday, November 20, 1993. Subcommittees were formed throughout the year and met as needed. By the second semester, there were only 5 faculty members on campus because of a variety of leaves. However, with those 5 people and the staff members, the committee did accomplish several projects.

Art in the Classroom

The committee held a competition for Indiana artists to submit slides for the Art in the Classroom project. The committee received 35 submissions, selected five semifinalists, then two finalists, Rudy Pozzatti and Brian H. Jones. Both artists were invited to campus over Spring Break to view the rooms that would hold the art and each artist submitted a proposal. Brian H. Jones submitted a proposal for ME 161 (174 seat capacity) and Rudy Possatti submitted a proposal for UNIV 303 (81 seat capacity). Both submissions were selected by the committee with the hope of receiving additional funding from the Dean of Liberal Arts and the Acting Dean of Engineering. Members of the committee met with the deans and each agreed to contribute $1000 toward the purchase of the works. VAC will contribute $2000 for each work.

The commission by Brian H. Jones should be completed by August '94 and installed before fall classes begin. The commission by Rudy Pozzatti will be complete in January '95 and will be installed before spring classes or over spring break. The installation of the works by Jones and Pozzatti will by the 12th and 13th be pieces in the Art in the Classroom.

Two works from the 1992-1993 Art in the Classroom were also installed over '94 Spring Break. A painting by Harry Davis was installed in Wetherill 173 and a fabric construction by Anne Nicolson was installed in Grissom 180.

Five non-commissioned works have also been installed on campus by the VAC. A complete listing of the works is attached.

Purchase of Student Works

A proposal was received from Peter smith to purchase Purdue graduate student and faculty works. The committee decided to make a purchase of up to $200 from the Graduate Student Show and made a selection. A photograph by Yingmei Chen was purchased for $200. It will be installed in the Psychology building.

The committee agreed to purchase other student works but did not believe there was sufficient funding to purchase faculty works at this time. The committee selected three student works from the year end show in the Beelke Gallery. Each student received $100 for their work. Those students were ViVien Chao, Mark Ailors and Lynn Suitlas. Location for installation will be determined at a future meeting.

Poster Collection

Donations of $1300 were made for the purchase of posters this year. A donation of $500 was received from HKLS and a donation of $300 was received from CDFS. Several donations were also received through PEP.

The poster collection has now reached a total of 11,054. Of those, 975 are framed and are actively traded. This year 438 posters were exchanged. A special thank you goes to Mona Berg and the Galleries staff for assuming responsibility for the Poster Collection and all the clerical and physical work involved with this collection.

"Art at Purdue" Brochure

Last year a brochure titled "Art at Purdue- A Tour of the University Art collections on the West Lafayette Campus" was produced by VAC through Printing Services. The brochure with a map was made available at several campus locations. All copies of the initial printing have been distributed. The brochure was reviewed by the committee and some of the wording was updated to emphasize how a patron might contribute to the collection. The brochure will be reprinted and will be distributed for the fall semester.

Future Projects

The committee is investigating ways to increase the number of posters in the campus subwalk system. New frames for posters would be needed as well as reviewing locations with the building services departments. A subcommittee is working on this project.

A second subcommittee has contacted the University Development Office to add VAC proposals to existing project lists. The subcommittee is proposing that support be obtained from a class or reunion class gift or from other donors. Continued contact will be made with the Development Office Staff.
