Visual Arts Committee
Report on Activities of VAC for 1986/7 Year

This year has been one of energetic and enthusiastic activity for this committee. Early in the year, the idea of placing art works in major classrooms on campus was undertaken as the committee's major activity. This idea, the brainchild of Ron Baker (Physical Plant) with incitement of Gary Sudano and Mona Berg, engendered considerable media and art community interest. Sixty-two Indiana artists submitted entries for the competition. The committee chose 4 finalists who visited campus, saw the two sites (1-105 Lilly Hall and 31 Lynn Hall) and then submitted designs. The quality of the works was such that the committee decided to make two awards, one nominally for 86/87 and one for 87/88. These awards will go to Diana and James Thornhill-Miller of Fort Wayne for a painted wood relief sculpture for the Lilly room and to Thom Maltby for a suite of three clay pieces.

The committee continued its long standing poster acquisition program and began to make plans for ambitious projects of acquisition of art in the future. We hope to work with the Development Office for a monumental sculpture for the proposed Purdue Plaza.
