Title: Technology innovations for increasing access to hearing healthcare – from concept to commercialization


Abstract: This presentation will describe the process by which innovation can mature, from a simple idea to a commercial product, including the many challenges that get in the way but also lead to better products. Over the past 15 years, Creare has developed several products that have the potential to greatly increase access to hearing healthcare. For example: the Wireless Automated Hearing Test System is an audiometer, sound booth and headphone all-in-one, small enough to fit in a backpack or purse that can measure accurate audiograms almost anywhere; the low-cost wireless otoacoustic emissions probe that works with a smartphone may one day lead to new infant hearing screening programs across the developing world; Open Source tools such as the tympan platform and TabSINT allow researchers and students to test out new concepts while reaching populations that may be difficult to include in human studies. Collaboration between academia, researchers, clinicians and a small business provides an ideal environment that ensures both scientific rigor, clinical relevance and a successful transition to the commercial marketplace where all users can benefit from these innovations.
