Title: Application of precision-audiology approaches to autism spectrum disorders
Abstract: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental syndromes classically characterized by atypical social communication. More recently, sensory processing challenges, particularly the experience of sensory “overload”, and difficulty with auditory selective attention (sometimes called “filtering” in the ASD literature) are being recognized as ubiquitous in this diverse population. This presentation will describe our efforts to characterize auditory processing anomalies in ASD within a broader precision-audiology framework. Results from two magnetoencephalography (MEG) studies will be discussed in this context. The first study focuses on executive function in ASD and the engagement of the cortical spatial-attention network (PMC3376722). The second focuses on cortical correlates of temporal-coherence based auditory scene analysis (PMC8884487).
