Community Profile: Owensville, Indiana

Population Served: slightly over 1000 people

Owensville is a community in the southern part of Indiana, in western Gibson County.

Lesson to be learned: The hardest part is “…getting started”

The town of Owensville held their first wellhead protection planning meeting in March of 1999. The initial meeting was fairly well attended. Using a technique that has worked well for other communities, personal letters of invitation were sent to property owners near the wells. The team has six members and every member is directly affected by wellhead protection planning.

They have completed their delineation and contaminant source inventory and are presently working on the management, education and contingency planning parts of the process.

When asked what the most difficult part of the process was so far, Mona Taylor, the town clerk, answered, “Just getting started…Once we got started things went OK.”

Her advice to other communities, “Send out letters to everyone who might be affected by wellhead protection planning, explaining what needs to happen and why. That way you can get people to help with the planning.”
