Lesson to be learned: Community involvement is essential for effective wellhead protection planning.

Cynthiana is a small town in southern Indiana with one well that is located in a farm field, just outside of town. Because the town uses less than 100,000 gallons of water per day it is eligible to use the fixed radius method of delineation. The town decided to use this option largely because there are no potential sources of contamination anywhere near the well. Cynthiana had a plan to accomplish its task and was progressing nicely toward having wellhead protection planning started when the water supply operator quit his job.

Unfortunately, the town had no community involvement and had not formed a wellhead protection planning team. When the water supply operator quit, all the work he had been doing toward wellhead protection planning was lost to the town.

They have now hired a new water supply operator, but as anyone can imagine, it will be a long time before the new person will get up-to-speed.
