Community water supplies that use ground water are required by a new Indiana Rule to develop a wellhead protection plan. Safe Water for the Future provides education that can help communities form a local planning team, hire a consultant if needed, carry out the contaminant source inventory (which often requires volunteer participation), and take the information learned to develop an effective management plan. Led by Water Quality Education Specialist Barbara Cooper, Ph.D., the Wellhead Protection Education Program can help your community develop an effective, manageable planning and outreach program that meets the needs of the community and the requirements of the rule.
Community water supplies that use surface water are not required to develop a water quality protection plan by Indiana law, but they can still benefit from planning and education. Safe Water for the Future provides education to communities that use surface water on the location, extent, and properties of their watershed, how to form a watershed partnership, how to develop a community monitoring program, and understanding the results.
