About Dr. Yuehwern Yih

Being an Industrial Engineer (IE), I was given amazing opportunities, space and flexibility in my research to be creative, to be an entrepreneur, and to make changes in people's lives. My core research is system modeling and decision making for complex system/operation design, monitoring, and evaluation. By analyzing the dynamics of system behaviors and dependencies among individual agents within the systems, we may develop a policy (evidence-based practice) to manage such system and mitigate its risks. Applications of this concept include manufacturing, warehouses, supply chains, water treatment system for mission to Mars, riot prediction, humanitarian aids, healthcare engineering, as well as addressing global challenges in developing countries.

In healthcare, I was able to make direct impacts in clinic operations, saving lives and improving the care quality that patients receive. I believe in building strong leaders to help healthcare institutions infuse system thinking to their operations to provide better and safer care with equity and affordability, ultimately, to build a healthier community. Examples of healthcare engineering research projects include quality assurance in clinical laboratories, preventive care for colorectal cancer, open access for outpatient clinics, care transition between hospitals and long-term care facilities, usability of EMR and information technology, telemedicine impact on older adults' health, surgical scheduling, workflow redesign for check-in process, process improvement in ER and admission to ICU, discharge strategies, visual cues to improve drug limit library updates on infusion pumps, etc.

I am an Institute for Industrial & Systems Engineers (IISE) Fellow, and an Executive Leadership in Academic Technology and Engineering (ELATE) Fellow. I received the inaugural Faculty Engagement Fellow Award based on designs for an integrated nutrition information system and food distribution system for HIV patients, and their implementation in Western Kenya. This integrated solution was deployed in 2005 and provided food for over 38,000 HIV patients and their families each year. This work was featured in the cover article of the January 2014 issue of Industrial Engineer magazine.

It's an exciting time to be in healthcare engineering and to "Rethink IE" in the Purdue University School of Industrial Engineering!
