The RVL SPEC DB is the specularity database was created by Jae Byung Park in the Robot Vision Laboratory (RVL) at Purdue University. So far, it contains over 300 color images corresponding to 100 objectss (shiny and dull) . Images were taken under three different illumination conditions, such as diffuse, ambient and directed light conditions. The pictures were taken at the RVL under strictly controlled conditions. This specularity database is publicly available and can be obtained from this web-site. It is totally free for academics whishing to test their systems. Commercial distribution or any act related to commercial use of this database is strictly prohibited.
The provided movie will guide you how the detection of specularity will help on the tasks of color object tracking:

Male images are stored as: M-xx-yy.raw
Females as: F-xx-yy.raw
'xx' is a unique person identifier (from "00" to "70" for males and from "00" to "56" for females)
'yy' specifies the features of each image; its meanings are described at the following table:
1 : Neutral expression
2 : Smile
3 : Anger
4 : Scream
5 : left light on
6 : right light on
7 : all side lights on
8 : wearing sun glasses
9 : wearing sun glasses and left light on
10 : wearing sun glasses and right light on
11 : wearing scarf
12 : wearing scarf and left light on
13 : wearing scarf and right light on
14 to 26 : second session (same conditions as 1 to 13)
A total of 30 sequences of images were also grabbed to test dynamic systems. Each sequence consist of 25 color images (same size as above).
CDs 1 to 8 contain the static images. CDs 9 and 10 contains the sequences.
You can convert images from RAW to any other format using ImageMagick or any other image software. Here's an example kindly propoused by Ben Wong (Georgia Tech):

This is only an example of how the images of the AR face database look like. To allow easier communication images have been reduced in size and except the first one all images have been converted to greyscale images (8 bits) and saved as JPG (with 75 quality rate). To get a real example click here.

1. Send an e-mail to Dr. Aleix M. Martinez before downloading the database. You will need a user-name and password to access the files of this database.
2. All submitted papers (or any publicly available text) that uses or talks about the AR face database must cite the following report: A.M. Martinez and R. Benavente, ``The AR face database," CVC Tech. Report #24, 1998.
3. Permission is NOT granted to reproduce the database or posted into any webpage that is not the AR face database web-page located at Purdue University.
4. Written permission must be obtained from Dr. Aleix M. Martinez if a faculty member desires to share the database with her/his co-workers or students. Even then, the database cannot be posted on a web-page accessible from outside the faculty research group.
5. None economical profit can be obtained from this database.
Understand that this database contains human subjects who agreed to participate in the adquisition of this dataset for research purposes. To guarantee the proper use of this database, the above steps are requested and must be followed by everyone. None country or institution is excluded of any of the above steps. Failure to follow the above steps can be legally persecuted.
(Although the large size of the files, this database has been downloaded from many countries outside the US - e.g. Germany, France, Japan, ... -. If you are downloading this database from outside the US, all you need is patience. The largs size of these face images will allow you to applied a large set of different algorithms - they can always be sampled, but never enlarged).
