ME58100 - Numerical Methods in Mechanical Engineering

Learning Objective:
To introduce the student to basic numerical analysis techniques which are used to solve science and engineering problems. To provide students with experience programming some of these techniques to help them gain familiarity with the methods and the errors associated with them.

Description:
This course will cover a range of numerical analysis techniques related to solving systems of linear algebraic equations, matrix eigenvalue problems, nonlinear equations, polynomial approximation and interpolation, numerical integration and differentiation, ordinary and partial differential equations.

Introduction; Computer Programming Languages and Software; Systems of Linear Algebraic Equations; Matrix Eigenvalue Problems; Nonlinear Equations; Polynomial Approximation and Interpolation; Numerical Differentiation and Integration; Ordinary Differential Equations; Partial Differential Equations

Prerequisites:
Graduate level standing in a science or engineering discipline. Some background in MATLAB, FORTRAN, or C and computer programming

Required--"A Friendly Introduction to Numerical Analysis", Brian Bradie, Prentice Hall 2006, ISBN 0-13-013054-0.

Computer Requirements:
ProEd minimum computer requirements; students will be required to write or use short computer programs written in Fortran90 and MATLAB. There will be several short lectures at the beginning of the course to introduce languages to the student but students are expected to learn these languages from reference material listed in the syllabus. It is anticipated that off-campus students will have access to the Purdue University computer system to facilitate use of the on-campus MATLAB license and the FORTRAN and C compilers from remote sites. Information on this access will be provided in class during the first week of the semester. Lecture notes, syllabus, and links will be on course website.
