ME51800 - Analysis of Thermal Systems

Learning Objective:
To provide the fundamentals of thermal system analysis and modeling; to develop a detailed understanding of vapor compression systems, absorption systems, and other advanced refrigeration equipment.

Description:
This course covers the philosophy, theory, and applications of the analysis, modeling and optimization of thermal systems. In particular, vapor compression, absorption, and some advanced refrigeration cycles are studied in detail. Students combine the use of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and numerical methods to develop and apply mathematical models for the analysis and optimization of specific equipment.

Thermodynamic Cycle Analysis; Psychrometrics; Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop; System Modeling; Refrigerants; Compressors; Condensers; Evaporators; Expansion Devices; Vapor Compression Systems; Absorption Cycles; Air Cycles; Stirling Cycles; Ericsson Cycles; Cyrogenics; Other Refrigeration Cycles.

Prerequisites:
Heat and mass transfer course and second level course in thermodynamics.

Homework:
Two to three homework problems will be assigned in each lecture; in addition, special problems may also be assigned on a special notice that involve small parametric analyses and that are best solved using EES; will be accepted via e-mail to groll@purdue.edu.

Projects:
None.

Exams:
One one-hour exam during the semester (Lecture 15) and one two-hour final exam; all tests will be open book and open notes.
