Learning Objective:
To develop methods for characterizing fatigue resistance of materials and predicting cyclic lives of structural components; discuss approaches for preventing fatigue failures through materials selection, fatigue resistant design, and "fleet management" concepts.

Description:
Development and application of methods for predicting the fatigue life of structural components. Characterization and response of materials to cyclic loading. Fatigue resistant design of structures. Both fatigue crack initiation and crack propagation concepts are discussed.

Topics Covered:
Course objectives; Characteristics of fatigue failure mode; Examples of service failures. Fatigue Crack Formation. Fatigue Crack Growth. Misc Fatigue Topics/Applications.

Prerequisites:
Prior course in strength of materials.

Exams:
Two one-hour exams and one two-hour comprehensive final exam.

Computer Requirements:
ProEd minimum computer requirements. Some homework assignments will entail ability to solve equations on a spreadsheet. It is also anticipated that some demonstrations and/or optional assignments would entail running fatigue life prediction software. Supplemental reading material will be available on the course web site.
