To enhance the understanding of thermodynamics principles and their relevance to the problems of humankind; provide the student with experience in applying thermodynamic principles to predict physical phenomena and to solve engineering problems.
Fundamental laws of thermodynamics and their application to thermal systems; second-law analysis, and the concept of exergy and its usefulness in optimizing thermal systems; introduction to chemical thermodynamics, and phase and chemical equilibrium; thermodynamics of combustion systems, heat transfer associated with combustion reactions, and equilibrium composition of the products of combustion.
Fundamental laws of thermodynamics; applications of availability and exergy concepts; introduction to chemical thermodynamics, and phase and chemical equilibrium; thermodynamics of combustion systems.
One semester of undergraduate courses in engineering thermodynamics; familiarity with the concepts of entropy, reversibility, equations of state, and simple combustion reactions.
Weekly assignments of about eight problems.
Three one-hour exams and one two-hour final exam.
