Electromagnetic and Electromechanical Component Design

Learning Objective:
To provide an understanding of single and multi-objective optimization based design; an understanding of and ability to model magnetic materials; the ability to analyze electromagnetic and electromechanical devices from a geometrical perspective; the ability to formulate and solve electromagnetic and electromechanical component design problems as optimization problems.

Description:
This course focuses on the design of electromagnetic and electromechanical components with power applications. The course includes design optimization methods, modeling techniques for design (as opposed to for simulation or analysis), and the formulation of design problems as optimization problems. Topics Covered:
Single Objective Optimization; Multi Objective Optimization; Applied Magnetics Including (1) Magnetic Material Characterization, (2) High Fidelity Magnetic Equivalent Circuits, (3) Skin Effect, (4) Proximity Effect; Power Inductor Design and Characterization; Electromagnet Design and Characterization; Permanenent Magnet Synchronous Machine Design and Characterization, Thermal Analysis Using Thermal Equivalent Circuits.

Prerequisites:
Understanding of theory of operation of permanent magnet synchronous machines (brushless dc machines), a basic knowledge of electromagnetic fields.

Homework:
Homework/projects will be assigned approximately every other week. A fair amount of coding in Matlab will be required. Homework will be accepted via internet at sudhoff@purdue.edu.

Projects:
Some homework problems will have a project-like flavor. The homeworks could be viewed as mini-projects.

Exams:
There will be one midterm exam and one non-cumulative final exam.

Computer Requirements:
ProEd minimum requirements. The homeworks (or mini-project) will require the student be be comfortable using Matlab. Student will write scripts and functions.
