PURVAC is dedicated to supporting the Natiional Visualization and
Analytics Center (NVAC) and the U. S. Department of Homeland Security in
confronting the challenges of safeguarding our nation against natural and
human-induced catastrophic events.
- Data Integration
Data integration is critical for homeland security applications to obtain
actionable knowledge from the large number of heterogeneous and
independent information sources. PURVAC has embarked on a multipronged
approach to solve several critical issues in data integration that will
enable actionable decision making environments for homeland security

We are evaluating and comparing privacy preservation methods with respect
to how they impact analysis effectiveness on real world data. Outcomes
will give new directions for preserving the privacy of information, while
still enabling actionable decision making in homeland security

The visual analytics disaster response life cycle defines the key
challenges facing first responders. By implementing systems based on this
framework, tools for improved coordination, delivery, detection and
response in large scale disaster management will be greatly enhanced.

PURVAC has developed testbeds for exploring advanced visual analytics
techniuqes in real-world environments. This work furthers the creation of

PURVAC is developing low-cost integrated sensor and video systems for

PURVAC has developed mobile visualization and analytical systems to
provide network analysts and diagnostic personnel with rich interactive
and exploratory tools to help monitor network traffic, investigate
incidents, and perform repair and maintenance work in the field.
Analytics for Emergency Response and Training
Our mobile visual analytics system provides a flexible and interactive
porototype for emergency response and training by allowing first
responders to better carry out rapid and actionable on-site analysis and
decision making. These tools provide improved situational awareness and
support first responders in planning immediate life-saving responses.

Integrated sensor and video analytics environments have the potential to
increase the reliability and confidence of data used during planning,
monitoring, detection, management, and response to critical incidents.

Modeling and Analysis for Disease Surveillance
Advanced statistical models are crucial for the early detection of
emerging infectious diseases. Our models provide healthcare professionals
with tools for measuring and predicting disease spread, allowing for rapid
detection and response to outbreaks. Such tools can dramatically curtail
outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases and reduce response time to
biological and chemical disasters and threats.
SYDOVAT technology provides researchers with a range of synthetic data
sets that are ideal for use in the evaluation of algorithms and methods
dealing with multivariate, spatiotemporal data exploration, analysis and

visual analysis and homeland security issues is a critical mission to
secure the future of our nation.
PanViz technology provides public health officials with a suite of visual analytic tools for analyzing the spread of a
pandemic influenza based on our ISPIPT model. This tool allows officials to analyze various decision points (school closure,
media reports and SNS release) and their impact on the spread of influenza.
Our visual analytics tool can aid users in complex decision making tasks
in real world applications with asymmetric information and uncertainty.
In particular, we address problems in the field of economics.
