Engineering with a Human Face

Bernard Amadei, Founder of Engineers Without Borders - USA

Bernard Amadei 1

Dr. Amadei is Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He received his PhD in 1982 from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Amadei is the Director of the Engineering for Developing Communities program at CU Boulder. He is also the Founding President of Engineers Without Borders - USA and the co-founder of the Engineers Without Borders-International network. The mission of EWB-USA is to partner with disadvantaged communities to improve their quality of life through implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while involving and training internationally responsible engineering professionals and students. Among other distinctions, Dr. Amadei is a 2007 co-recipient of the Heinz Award for the Environment and is a newly elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.

Abstract:  The lecture will present the challenges and opportunities associated with providing sustainable, equitable and appropriate solutions to the basic needs of about 5 billion people whose job is to stay alive by the end of the day. Quoting Albert Einstein, "The significant problems we face cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them," it is clear that engineering needs to embrace a new mindset in education, R&D, and practice. Addressing today's developing world problems requires the education of a new generation of globalized engineers working hand-in-hand with local communities, governments, and international development organizations and an engineering profession willing to interact with other disciplines.
