We hosted an exhibition booth called "Smart Buildings: Containing Earthquake Damage" at the AAAS Meeting in San Diego, February 18-21, 2010 in partnership with NEES.

Test Schedule

Real-time hybrid testing with the MR Dampers is ongoing at the Lehigh University NEES site. Future testing involving a multi-story frame is planned beginning in the summer 2010 and will be posted.

Smart Buildings: Containing Earthquake Damage

AAASWe hosted an exhibition booth called "Smart Buildings: Containing Earthquake Damage" at the AAAS meeting in San Diego, February 18-21, 2010.

 

In 10'x10' area designated for our group, we demonstrated four different experiments which are simplified version of miscellaneous educational tools and currently conducted research topics. In addition to that, four posters with various themes related to earthquake engineering were used to support the content of the demonstrations. The booth was very well attended with more than 200 visitors. Visitor profile consisted of families with children, policy-makers of the industry, press, professors and graduate students.

 

The booth was mostly for the people interested in learning more about protection against earthquakes, current and on-going technologies providing more structural safety. This was achieved through
1. Visual appeal: Eye catching, easy-to-understand demonstrations using simple tools.
2. Interactive appeal: Demos and presentations on computers for the public to interact with.
3. Information appeal: Displayed material to read and or take away.
4. Touch appeal: Hands-on experiment with MR fluid and demonstration of fluid's damping capability.
