Hydrogen and Fuel Cell
Hydrogen generation and storage, and novel fuel cell design and analysis research is carried out in the hydrogen and fuel cell area. As part of the Department of Energy (DOE) Nuclear Hydrogen Initiative (NHI) thermochemical production of hydrogen using high temperature nuclear heat is considered. Sulfur-iodine cycle, hybrid sulfur cycle, high temperature electrolysis, and coupling of high temperature gas cooled reactor such as prismatic and pebble bed modular reactor (PBMR) to the hydrogen production plant are studies.
For portable hydrogen storage for transportation, chemical hydrides and metal hydrides are studied.Hydrolysis of ammonia borane, sodium borohydride hydrolysis, and catalysts development activities are carried out. Portable hydrogen generator systems for plymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell, with novel flow field for PEM fuel cell, direct sodium borohydride fuel cell are being developed. Simulation activates include work on molten carbonate fuel cell coupled to a gas turbine design, solar regenerative fuel cell for high altitude air ship, and cold start up and water management in PEM fuel cell.
