Plasma-Facing Materials in Nuclear Magnetic Fusion
One (1) Research Assistant position is available for the Spring 08 and Fall 08 for a graduate student interested in the area of Plasma-facing materials in nuclear magnetic fusion. This position will focus on the study of mixed materials evolution for candidate plasma-facing components in ITER (International Tokamak Experimental Reactor). The student will primarily work on the study of materials mixing and surface response to tokamak plasma conditions for a variety of candidate ITER materials including: Be, W and nanocrystalline W. Other topics may include lithiated graphite and/or lithium-based systems. The student will also conduct computational benchmarking with state-of-the art experiment facilities at Purdue and with collaborators including: MIT, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and UC San Diego. This project is one of several research thrusts in the Allain Research Group at Purdue. Professor to contact: Professor Allain

Surface and Interface Science with Focus on Radiation Interaction with Soft Matter
One (1) Research Assistant position is available for the Spring 08 and Fall 08 for a graduate student interested in the area of surface and interface science with focus on radiation interaction with soft matter. This position will focus on the development of a new experimental facilty designed to study how surfaces and interfaces respond to radiation. In particular, the state-of-the art facility will provide in-situ surface characterization with novel techniques able to probe soft matter (e.g. biomaterial-inorganic interfaces, porous media, low-dimensional state systems). Surface characterization will include techniques that study ultrafast phenomena of radiation-surface interactions at the nano- and micro-scales using time-resolved soft X-ray microscopy techniques. Fellowships

The School of Nuclear Engineering was allocated 3 Ross Fellowships at $18,000 per year for each from the Graduate School and College of Engineering for the 2008-2009 school year. This fellowship is for PhD-track graduate students and provides a four-year package. This fellowship also provides tuition coverage and a medical insurance supplement.
