Enrique Busquets Selected as Finalist for Student Paper Award at 9th JFPS Symposium

We are delighted to report that a paper submitted by our Enrique Busquets is being considered as a finalist for the Student Paper Award at the 9th JFPS International Symposium on Fluid Power. His paper is "The World's First Displacement-Controlled Excavator Prototype with Pump Switching - A Study of the Architecture and Control." The final award selection will be announced at the symposium in Japan, October 28-31, 2014.

Congratulations to Dr. Naseem Daher on a Successful Ph.D. Defense!

We are pleased to announce that Naseem successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation on August 26, 2014! Naseem has worked as part of the Maha team under Prof. Ivantysynova since joining in August, 2011. His research culminated in the development of an energy saving displacement controlled steer-by-wire technology.

The Maha team will miss Naseem and his contributions, but we wish him great success as he moves on to the next phase of his career. Below are pictures from his defense, and the challenges set for him by his colleagues.

Mike Sprengel Wins Best Paper Award at 8th FPNI PhD Symposium

We are proud to report that Mike Sprengel won the Backe Medal at the 8th FPNI PhD Symposium on Fluid Power held in Lappeenranta, Finland on June 11-13, 2014 for his paper titled, "Hardware-in-the-Loop Testing of a Novel Blended Hydraulic Hybrid Transmission."

The Backe Medal is given for the best paper presented at each FPNI PhD Symposium. Mike is the fifth recipient of the Maha team to receive this prestigious award since the establishment of the FPNI PhD Symposium in 2000. Congratulations to Mike on this outstanding achievement!

Congratulations Natalie on a Successful Master's Defense!

Maha Welcomes CCEFP REU Bootcamp Students

The 2014 CCEFP Fluid Power REU Bootcamp was held at Purdue University on May 27-29, 2014. Undergraduate students from various U.S. universities joined the Center’s universities (Georgia Tech, University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, University of Minnesota, Milwaukee School of Engineering, North Carolina A&T State University, Purdue University, and Vanderbilt University) to perform research in fluid power during the summer period.

A crash course was designed to teach the students the fundamental principles of hydraulics and pneumatics. The program started by an opening address by Prof. Monika Ivantysynova about fluid power in general and then a lecture entitled "Introduction to Fluid Power Systems" by Prof. Andrea Vacca. The students attended the following lectures / demonstrations:

- "Water Hydraulic Test Rig" prepared by Guido Francesco Ritelli

- "Hydraulic Circuit Construction and Debugging" prepared by Gabriele Altare

- "Pump Displacement Controlled Actuation Technology" prepared by Naseem Daher and Enrique Busquets

- "Hydraulic Pumps and Motors" prepared by Dan Mizell and Lizhi Shang

Special thanks to Susan Gauger for her excellent organization and for taking care of all the logistics required to make the bootcamp a successful one. Also, many thanks to Alyssa Burger for providing the resources to organize this event.

Congratulations to Prof. Ivantysynova For Being Elected to SAE Fellow Grade!

We are happy to announce that Prof. Monika Ivantysynova has been awarded the SAE Fellow Grade of Membership, which is SAE’s premier membership grade, intended to “honor and recognize important engineering, scientific, and leadership achievements to enhance the status of SAE’s contributions to the profession and to society.”

The SAE Fellows Committee selected Prof. Ivantysynova for her outstanding achievements in fluid power research, developing energy efficient systems for mobile vehicle applications. Prof. Ivantysynova was honored during the SAE 2014 World Congress and Exhibition held in Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. during the week of April 6, 2014. Congratulations to Dr. Rohit Hippalgaonkar on a Successful Ph.D. Defense!

We are glad to announce that Rohit successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation on Apr. 03, 2014. Rohit joined the Maha team under Prof. Ivantysynova’s direction in June 2010, and his research focused on power management and motion control strategies for hydraulic hybrid mobile multi-actuator machines with displacement controlled actuators.

Aachen HP Award Won by a Former Maha Researcher!

Congratulations to Dr. Davide Cristofori, whose PhD dissertation titled "ADVANCED CONTROL STRATEGIES FOR MOBILE HYDRAULIC APPLICATIONS" received the Aachen HP Award during the International Fluid Power Conference IFK2014 (Aachen, Germany, March 24-26, 2014). The Aachen HP Award is awarded to persons who have distinguished themselves by outstanding studies in the field of Fluid Power.

The First Issue of the International Journal of Fluid Power Published by Taylor & Francis is now Available

We are happy to announce that the first issue of the International Journal of Fluid Power published by Taylor & Francis is now available online. Please check the journal's website for the latest issue.

The journal will continue to be published three times annually. Authors should submit their papers to the International Journal of Fluid Power. Taylor & Francis is currently preparing an online submission tool, which will become available during the next few months. In the mean time, authors should continue to send their papers to Prof. Monika Ivantysynova or Susan Gauger.

2014 FPNI PhD Symposium will be Organized in Participation with the FPST Division of the ASME

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has announced that the 2014 Fluid Power Net International (FPNI) PhD symposium will be organized with active participation of the Fluid Power Systems and Technology (FPST) Division of the ASME. This initiative on joint conferences will allow increased visibility for FPST and also easy access of ASME web tools and resources for FPNI.

Congratulations to Dr. Sujan Dhar on a Successful Ph.D. Defense!

We are happy to announce that Sujan successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation on Jan. 24, 2014. Sujan joined the Maha team under Prof. Vacca’s direction in 2010 and his research topics included CFD simulation of flow in lubricating gaps of external gear machines, and studying the effect of the flow in lubricating gaps on the performance and efficiency of the gear machines.

Exciting News – The International Journal of Fluid Power will now be published by Taylor & Francis!

Starting January 1, 2014 the International Journal of Fluid Power will be published by Taylor & Francis. This change of publisher will bring several new features for authors, reviewers and readers as well as the editorial team. The scope, content and layout of the Journal will remain unchanged; however, we might work with Taylor & Francis on a new cover layout later next year. The Journal has a new webpage, where past and new issues will be available for downloading.

After spending four years at the Maha Lab, Marco successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation on November 21, 2013. We are proud to report that several Maha graduate students received awards during the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP) annual meeting that was held in Sarasota, Florida on Oct. 9-11, 2013. A poster show session was organized on the opening evening where CCEFP students got to present their research in front of judges and other interested members of the center. Davide Cristofori won third place award, while Ashley Wondergem, Ram Sudarsan Devendran, and Rohit Hippalgaonkar received Honorable Mentions for their posters.

Welcome New Maha Members!

Maha welcomes five new members to the lab:

Tyler Bleazard, a Master’s student and recent graduate of Brigham Young University (Provo, Utah) will be working in the systems group researching energy saving actuation.

Meike Ernst, a Master’s student and recent graduate of Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio) will be working in the pump modeling group under Marco Zecchi’s (PhD Candidate) guidance.

Phil St. Hilaire, a Master’s student and recent graduate of Midwestern State University (Wichita Falls, Texas) will work in the systems group with Rohit Hippalgaonkar (PhD Candidate) on the hydraulic hybrid excavator and future projects.

Kyle Williams, a former Maha Master's graduate, has rejoined the team as a PhD student and will continue his research on hydraulic hybrid powertrains.

Dr. Hong Gao will join the lab as a visiting scholar for 1 year. Dr. Gao is a member of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Institute of Design and Control Engineering for Heavy Equipment.

Maha's DC Excavator Nominated by NSF for the 2013 Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award!

We are proud to report that Maha’s research on the Pump Displacement Controlled (DC) Excavator under Dr. Ivantysynova’s direction has been nominated by the NSF for the 2013 Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award. This recognition is for “innovators or teams of innovators who are making important advances in the fields of engineering, technology, medicine, and other applied sciences with a potential for large social impact.” The DC mini excavator with its new hydraulic hybrid architecture for the swing drive represents the world’s first prototype of its kind.

Maha Welcomes CCEFP Bootcamp Students

The 2013 CCEFP Fluid Power REU Bootcamp was held at Purdue University on May 29-30, 2013. Welcome 2013 SURF Students!

The Maha team welcomes the arrival of two SURF researchers and wishes them the best of luck on successful projects this summer.

1. Jordyn Miller will research the slipper/swash plate interface of axial piston machines under the mentorship of Andrew Schenk.

2. Yangqiao Zheng will research pump displacement control actuation and investigate pump-switching concept feasibility under the mentorship of Enrique Busquets.

Also joining us this summer is Chenhao Ma, an undergraduate researcher, who will research hydraulic powertrains and hybrid systems under the mentorship of Michael Sprengel.

NSF Site Visit of CCEFP at Purdue

This year’s NSF Site Visit of the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP) took place at Purdue University on April 22-25, 2013.

Part of the NSF Site Visit was a tour of the Maha Fluid Power Research Center. This allowed more than 130 people to tour our lab on Tuesday afternoon. Maha graduate students presented the Maha test rigs and their research projects to the NSF Site Visit team, the Industrial Advisory Board, and all other guests and members of the CCEFP. One of the highlights of the lab tour was a live demonstration of the CCEFP Test Bed 1, the displacement controlled mini excavator with its new hydraulic hybrid architecture for the swing drive. This machine represents the world’s first of its kind.

Bath/ASME Symposium on Fluid Power & Motion Control (FPMC 2013), October 6-9, 2013, Sarasota, Florida, USA

The University of Bath Center for Power Transmission and Motion Control (PTMC) and ASME Fluid Power Systems Technology Division (FPST) have extended invitations for interested authors to submit paper abstracts for the Symposium on Fluid Power and Motion Control (FPMC 2013).

This International Symposium provides a forum for leading-edge activities in the field of fluid power and motion control. The Symposium will be of great interest and value to all practitioners and researchers in the fluid power, power transmission and motion control community. FPMC is held in the USA and at the University of Bath, UK on alternating years. The 2013 venue, pictured below, is in the USA at the Lido Beach Resort in Sarasota, Florida.

Congratulations Sujan!

We are proud to report that Sujan Dhar’s poster entitled "Fluid Structure Interaction Modeling of Lubricating Interface in Gear Machines" won the second prize at the poster competition organized at the 2012 CCEFP Annual meeting and the NFPA Fluid Power Workforce Summit. Congratulations Matteo & Monika for Winning Best Paper Award at FPMC 2011!

We are extremely proud to report that Dr. Matteo Pelosi, a past Ph.D. graduate from the Maha lab, and Prof. Monika Ivantysynova have won the Best Paper Award at the ASME/Bath Symposium on Fluid Power & Motion Control (FPMC), which was held in Washington, DC in October 2011, for their paper entitled “Surface deformations enable high pressure operation of axial piston pumps.” The Best Paper Award is usually given at the following year’s award ceremony. Monika received the FPMC 2011 Best Paper Award during last week's ASME/Bath workshop in Bath, UK.

The ASME/Bath Symposium on Fluid Power and Motion Control is one of the highest ranked conferences in fluid power research worldwide. All papers are peer reviewed and only a limited number of papers are approved. This is the fourth time that the Maha group has won the Best Paper Award at the ASME/Bath Symposium.

Welcome New Maha Members!

Maha welcomes new members Rene Chacon Portillo (Master Student), Lizhi Shang (Visiting Researcher), Damiano Padovani (PhD Student), and Taeho Kim (PhD Student) to the lab. Andrew and Marco win best paper awards at FPNI PhD Symposium

We are proud to report that Andrew Schenk won the Backe Medal at the 7th FPNI PhD symposium in Reggio Emilia, Italy for his paper on "The Influence of Swashplate Elastohydrodynamic Deformation in the Slipper-Swashplate Interface". The Backe Medal is given for the best paper presented at each FPNI PhD symposium. Andrew is the fourth recipient of the Maha team since establishment of the FPNI PhD symposium in 2000, who received this prestigious award. Congratulation to this outstanding achievement!

Congratulation to Marco. Marco Zecchi's paper and presentation on "An investigation of the impact of micro surface shaping on the cylinder block/valve plate inter-face performance through a novel thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic model" was selected for the distinguished paper recognition award.

Congratulations Massimo for winning Best Thesis Award!

Massimo Dallasta won the Italian Association of Manufacturing And Trading Companies in Fluid Power Equipment and Components (Assofluid) prize! Massimo worked at Maha on the design and realization of a test rig for water-hydraulic components with Dr. Andrea Vacca. Massimo's thesis was selected among the most outstanding Master Thesis by the Italian Assofluid.

  • Tridib Saha will be working with Rohit Hippalgaonkar on the prognostics system for displacement controlled multi-actuator hydraulic hybrid machines.
  • Cary Wood will be working with Paul Kalbfleisch on the systematic and methodical approach to modal analysis within hydraulic axial pumps.
  • Bruce Vonniederhausern will be working with Andrew Schenk on the Lubricating Film Thickness in the axial piston pump.

Windows Forms C# .NET Programming job

The Maha Fluid Power Research Center is seeking a qualified C# .NET Windows Forms programmer to develop a GUI application to serve as a wrapper for an already developed Windows OS scientific code. The GUI will mainly be used to provide an interface for editing input ASCII text files, monitoring execution of the separate computational .exe, and plotting 2D graphs using the .NET 4.0 Charting Controls. On Friday February 10, 2012 the Maha team welcomed Ken and Susan Warren, who decided to support the Maha research with $10,000 every year. Ken has been in fluid power industry for decades and is currently working for Parker Aerospace. Monika gave an overview presentation of the Maha research followed by presentations of Marco, Mike, Najoua, and Paul about their research projects. Fall 2011 CCEFP IAB Meeting

The Maha lab hosted the CCEFP IAB (Industrial Advisory Board) meeting Sep 13-14, 2011. Congratulations Nicholas!

Nicholas Louis, a 2011 SURF student received the "Top Research Talk Award" for his presentation entitled "High Pressure Water Hydraulic Test Rig for Education and Research Experiences" at the 2011 SURF Research Symposium. Nicholas was advised by Andrea Vacca and mentored by Tim Opperwall.

Congratulations Michael and Brent!

Michael Cross, a SURF student at Maha during 2008, and then a graduate student here for the past two years, successfully defended his Master's thesis on sizing hydraulic hybrids with optimal control. Immediately following Michael's defense, Brent Warr also successfully defended his Master's thesis on hydraulic hybrid design using real world drive data. Congratulations Monika!

2010 seems to be an incredible year for Monika. In addition to just having received the Bramah medal, Monika received a Doctor Honoris Causa degree from her Alma mater, the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava on Oct. 20, 2010. The degree is being awarded for her outstanding lifetime achievements in fluid power and dedication to the university. Congratulations Monika!

Monika has been awarded the Joseph Bramah Medal 2009. This medal is awarded by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' (UK) - Mechatronics Informatics and Control Group. The medal has been awarded for her outstanding commitment to international fluid power research and education, particularly in the field of hydrostatic pumps and motors. The Joseph Bramah fund was established in 1968 at the instigation of Mr Frank Towler, a Fellow of the Institution (1932- 1977), who arranged for its support by industry to commemorate Joseph Bramah, the inventor of a patent lock, the hydraulic press and other inventions concerned with pumps, water supply and the production of pipes and tubes by the extrusion process.

Francis Grover from Jefferson High School

The Maha Lab is proud to announce its first high school student, Francis Grover, has completed the Science Research Course in affiliation with Jefferson High School. Francis presented his work at the Lafayette Regional Science & Engineering Fair at Purdue. Monika's a grandmother!

Round-the-World Conference Trip Concludes Successfully

Professor Ivantysynova and her PhD student, Chris Williamson, east to Bath, England and from there east again to Toyama, Japan. After 14 days abroad and travelling, they're surely glad to be home!

Maha Wins Best Paper Award

Maha Master's student Jonathan Baker wins award for Best Paper at the 5th FPNI PhD Symposium in Krakow, Poland. Along with the awarding of the Backé Medal to Jonathan, Najoua Jouini and Richard Klop also received honorable mention.

The Maha Research Center has moved!

Since its conception in 2004, the group has continuously expanded. As the need for more office and lab space became necessary, another completely new home was found across town.

Summer 2008 SURF Students

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship students have arrived at the Maha Research Center. Six undergraduate students from all over the Americas will spend 11 weeks experiencing research at a graduate level.

ME Announces New Fluid Power Faculty Member

Dr. Ashley Martini from Northwestern University will be joining Purdue University and the CCEFP as a new researcher in the field of fluid power, focusing on tribology. She and her students will work alongside the current team at the Maha Research Center.
