Research Interests

Development of Ceramic-precursor Capsules from Monodispersed Double Emulsions
We have developed a method to fabricate monodispersed hollow ceramic-precursor capsules from double emulsions drops generated using microcapillary microfluidic devices. The double emulsion drops contain a mixture of water and Zr-acetylacetonate (crosslinker) in the inner droplet while the outer drop is composed of Zr-acetylacetonate and poly(methylsilsequioxane) resin (the precursor) dissolved in 1 cSt polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) oil. The outer drop is crosslinked at 80 oC and after removing the excess oil the capsules are dried in ambient conditions. Capsules with diameters ranging from 30 - 180 ?m were easily generated by adjusting the fluid flow rates and solution compositions.
