MSE 44500 Materials Engineering Systems Analysis and Design

Credits and Contact Hours: 3 credits. Weekly Schedule for 15 weeks: three 50 minute lectures.

Specific Course Information

  1. Catalog Description: Integration of materials engineering core coursework with statistical, economic and environmental considerations for analysis and design of systems. Analysis of primary materials processing operations using mathematical and statistical models for predicting interactive effects and process optimization. Specification of materials and processes for mechanical designs, incorporating properties assessment and tradeoffs, cost analysis, and performance optimization with multiple constraints.
  2. Prerequisites: MSE 33000 and MSE 34000, Corequisites: MSE 43000.
  3. Course Status: MSE 44500 is a required course.

Specific Goals for the Course

1. All Students

A. Translate performance attributes in a given design to the corresponding nominal material properties.

B. Derive and apply material indices to materials selection for single- and multi-objective designs using the CES materials database and software tools.

C. Specify manufacturing processes for a given component design (material, shape, production rate) using basic cost modeling.

D. Apply a computational model for simulating a materials production and/or processing operation.

E. Quantify material properties, processing and performance variability using statistical methods. Examples: error analysis, probability distributions, sampling theory, statistic intervals and statistical process control charts.

F. Perform basic calculations for engineering cost analysis and use those results to make choices among trade-offs in product design or process operation.

2. Most Students

A. Locate and evaluate design information for specific materials and processes. Examples: testing standards, processing specifications, commercial data and patents.

B. Apply quantitative trade-off strategies in selection of materials for designs with conflicting objectives.

C. Apply computational models for materials production and/or processing operations to predict interactive effects of inputs on material quality, production rates, cost minimization, and environmental impact.

D. Optimize material and process selection simultaneously, based on refined functional relationships between processing, properties and costs.

3. Some Students

A. Independently propose a direction and strategy for new material and/or process (not presently commercial) development.
