Who Are We?
Purdue University Material Advantage is a social and professional networking organization for Purdue students majoring in Materials Engineering. Membership is open to all Materials Engineering students and dues are paid annually through ASM.
We host many fun events and fundraisers throughout the year and work to involve all of our members. We engage our members and encourage them to learn more about the discipline. Networking with professors and other key people is also an integral part of what we do.
Our organization is Purdue's Student Material Advantage chapter and we work in conjunction with the many other Materials Science related professional societies including ACerS, AIST, ASM, and TMS.
PUMA promotes communication among students in Materials Engineering as well as on campus and in professional atmospheres.
What We Do
Each fall, our organization helps sponsor a group of our members to attend MS&T - Materials Science and Technology; an annual convention which can further educate our members on the opportunities available to them as MSE's. This provides an opportunity for our members to interact with alumni, donors, industry representatives, and researchers.
Each spring, our members show their support for our community by taking an active role and creating a Relay For Life team to participate in Purdue's annual Relay For Life.
We also work to coordinate a variety of social activities for students throughout the course of the year to allow the students in our discipline to interact with each other more.
Professional Development Opportunities
This April, we will be sending our 2nd delegation to Washington, D.C. as a part of the Material Advantage Congressional Visit Days. While last year's event was exciting, this year is even more promising as we are sending almost twice the students we did last year. Congressional Visit Days provide a wonderful opportunity for our students to meet with their Congressmen/women and Senators to express their interest and support by advocating for continued government funding of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math related fields.
Our students are also routinely invited to participate in events from monthly professional society meetings to plant tours.
