Vertical Bearing Testing Rig

The VBTR is run by a five horsepower A.C. motor and is used to test angular contact ball or tapered roller bearings operating at various thrust loads and speeds.  The torque generated by the bearing in operation is measured indirectly with a proximity sensor that measures the displacement twist of the shaft.  Thermocouples are used to measure the outer race temperature and sump oil temperature.  Data is acquired via LABVIEW.  Different lubricants and bearing materials can be used to examine heat generation, torque generation, and friction with the various combinations.
