Reciprocating Piston Test Rig

The RPTR is based on a single cylinder, ten horsepower engine.  The cylinder block is separated from the rest of the engine and supported by two force transducers which measure axial friction force as well as piston side force.  This motored test rig neglects combustion gas temperature and pressure effects, but it does account for piston secondary motion as well as the friction of a full ring pack and the piston skirt.  Adjustable parameters are lubricant viscosity, piston speed, and surface finish.  This apparatus is currently being used to extend the analytical models to provide accurate results for a full engine.
