Web page file extensions
There can be many types of file extensions to your web page
depending on the capabilities you would like the web page to have.
The following section describes the most popular form of file
extensions for web pages:
.html/.htm : These are the default and most common
file extensions and define a default web page having the hyper text
markup language (html) capabilities.
.whtml : If you would like to have a uniform set of
web pages having a consistent look, then you can create wrappers around your
html web page. This way you ensure that all your html web pages have the same
scheme. The ME web page is an example of the use of wrappers (https://www.purdue.edu/ME)
.shtml : This extension stands for server
parsed html. The filename extension enables the web server to
differentiate those pages that need to be processed before they are sent to the
browser. It can be required when you would like the server to dynamically
generate some data when requested by the web page.
.wshtml : A .wshtml extension gives you the
capabilities of both wrappers and server side parsing for your web page.
