WEB PAGES AND PERL SCRIPTS

Enabling CGI scripts for Dynamic Web Content

(ECN Apache 2 Server)

CGI scripts are one means of generating html files on the fly. These generated pages can take many different types of data from the requesting user, databases or the system itself. Any programming language, compiled or scripted,  can be used to generate CGI scripts. The most common are Shell Scripts, Perl Scripts and Python scripts.

To enable your site to use CGI scripts, you must add these commands to the .htaccess file in either the root of your site or the 'cgi-bin' directory of your site. A separate application type line must be added for each extension you use for your active content.

EXAMPLE: cgi and pl file extensions for active content

Options +ExecCGI
AddType application/x-httpd-cgi .pl
AddType application/x-httpd-cgi .cgi
