Mac SAMBA Printing

Printing to a Samba/Windows Printer from Mac OSX

To connect to an ME printer from your Mac do the following:

 10.8.x

  • The steps below have worked on some Apple computers running OS-X 10.8, however, due to Apple's support structure for SMB printing, we cannot gaurantee they will work on every machine running OS-X 10.8.

If you are an ME faculty or Staff member with a University owned Mac machine, please contact the E-shop for access to printing.

  • From System Preferences, select "Print & Scan"
  • Click the + sign to add a printer
  • Right-click (ctrl-click) on any icon in the top of the window that opens
  • Select "Customize toolbar" from the menu that pops up
  • Drag the 'Advanced' icon onto the icon toolbar and click 'Done'
  • Click the Advanced icon
  • Select "Windows printer via spools" in the "Type" menu
  • For "URL" enter: smb://meprint64.ecn.purdue.edu/printername
(where "printername" is the printer you are connecting to [example: me2038hpc] .
  • Select "Generic PostScript Printer" in the "Use" menu then click "Add"
  • Click "OK" on the window that displays
  • When you print you will be prompted for your Career Account username and password. Check the "Remember this password" box or it will prompt you every time you print.

 10.7.x

  • Apple has changed the support structure for SMB based printing.  Due to this, machines running OS-X 10.7 or later are not supported as clients for the ME network printers.

If you are an ME faculty or Staff Member with a University owned Mac machine, please contact the E-shop for access to printing.

 10.6.x

  • Apple has changed some core functionality in the later patches to version 10.6 (and perhaps earlier versions) which will prevent the Mac from printing to the ME network printers. We do not support the apple platform as a client to the ME network printers. The following instructions may or may not work depending upon which version of 10.6 you are running.

If you are an ME faculty or Staff member with a University owned Mac machine, please contact the E-shop for access to printing.

  • From System Preferences, select "Print & Fax"
  • Click the + sign to add a printer
  • Right-click (ctrl-click) on any icon in the top of the window that opens

  • For "URL" enter: smb://meprint64.ecn.purdue.edu/printername
(where "printername" is the printer you are connecting to [example: me2038hpc] .

  • In the "Choose a Driver or Printer Model" dropdown, choose "Select Printer Software" and find your printer model in the list that opens. A list of ME printer models is available here. OR you can choose a Generic

  • When you print you will be prompted for your Career Account username and password. Check the "Remember this password" box or it will prompt you every time you print.

10.5.x

  • Apple has made changes to the latest releases of OS X which impacts the ability for a Mac to connect to the ME network printers. At one time, the instructions below worked properly. With the release of patches to the OS, this may no longer be the case. The E-shop simply does not know if this will continue to work on the outdated Mac operating Systems.

  • From System Preferences, select "Print & Fax"
  • Click the + sign to add a printer
  • Right-click (ctrl-click) on any icon in the top of the window that opens
  • Select "Customize toolbar" from the menu that pops up
