Purdue Online MSME Curriculum Guide

Coursework Requirements

30 credit hours are required to complete the online MSME degree, and can consist of 1- 2-, and 3-credit hour courses.

  • Must include 15 credit hours of Mechanical Engineering graduate-level courses
  • Must include 6 credit hours of graduate-level Applied Math, three credits of which must be taken from the Department of Mathematics
  • 9 credit hours of graduate-level Technical Elective courses from Engineering, Mathematics, or Science.

Plan of Study

You will create a plan of study (POS) that lists the courses you plan to take and their timing (see sample POS at the bottom of this document).  Your POS must be submitted as final before the end of your first semester, or your registration PIN will be held and you won’t be able to register for the next semester of classes.

Grade & GPA Requirements

  • You must complete all courses on your POS with a grade of no less than a C−.
  • No grades of D or F are allowed on your POS.
    • Any plan of study course with a grade of D or F must be repeated. You cannot drop them from your POS.
  • You must attain a minimum cumulative index (GPA) of 2.85 to successfully complete the MSME.
  • Graduate-level transfer courses are not included in your GPA calculation.

Time to Degree Completion

  • Most students will complete the online MSME in 2-4 years.
  • If you do not enroll in three consecutive semesters (approximately 1 calendar year), you will become inactive and must reapply to Purdue.
    • No minimum number of credit hours per semester is required for the online MSME.
