The exam will be based on the material covered in ME 587. This includes the following topics:

  • Imaging
  • Interference
  • Coherence
  • Diffraction
  • Polarization
  • Fresnel Equations, Thin Films
  • Optical Properties of Materials
  • Laser Beam Propagation

Hecht, Optics, 2nd through 4th Editions, Addison-Wesley, 1987-2000.

Exam Philosophy

The examination is intended to determine the student’s grasp of optical fundamentals and their application to specific problems. The ability to see what factors are important in a given problem and what solution approach to use will be emphasized.

Exam Format

The exam is open book written exam. One of the reference books listed above can be used; however, any other materials such as supplementary notes, past homework, past exams, etc. are not allowed.

The exam will be two hours in length. It will consist of a number of problems to be worked.
