Purdue University's Mechanical Engineering Graduate Program
Basic Instructions and Academic Requirements for International Applicants

The application process for graduate studies in Mechanical Engineering occurs in two steps:
  I.   Application
  II.  Financial Assistance

I. Basic Academic Requirements for International Applicants

Basic requirements can be found by clicking here.

Applicants will receive an email acknowledging the receipt of the application materials. Application materials not submitted at the same time (especially official copies of all transcripts and degree documents) may not be evaluated in time to meet application deadlines.

Please refer to General Information for Incoming Graduate Students for links to forms.

Completed application files will be evaluated as follows:

  • Fall semester admission: completed application files will be evaluated beginning October 1.
  • Spring semester admission: completed application files will be evaluated from August 1 through September 30.

Students evaluated to be academically qualified or disqualified will be notified by email. Inquiries regarding the status of applications will be responded after decisions of admission are made. Please inquire by email only to megradapps@purdue.edu. For your protection we cannot respond to telephone inquiries.

II. Financial Assistance

There are two forms of financial assistantships available to international students: fellowships or teaching and research assistantships. The fellowships are offered in mid-February. The teaching assistantships are not usually offered to first year international students. Applicants who are notified as being academically qualified are encouraged to contact professors whose research area matches their interests for possible research assistantship positions.

The School of Mechanical Engineering requires that all international students receive an offer of financial support (teaching assistantship, research assistantship, or fellowship) before a formal offer of admission is extended. If a student can prove through the submission of substantial documentation that he or she has financial support for a minimum of one year, a request can be submitted to the ME Graduate Office for admission with the student’s own financial support.
