Michael R. Ladisch, Director of the Laboratory of Renewable Resources Engineering, is a Distinguished Professor in Agricultural and Biological Engineering and in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering. at Purdue University. He was Chief Technology Officer at Mascoma Corporation from 2007 to 2013. His BS (Drexel University), MS and PhD (Purdue University) are in Chemical Engineering. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and Fellow of AIMBE, AIChE, ACS, AAAS and the National Academy of Inventors. He serves on committees of the National Academies and on the Board of the Foundation for Food and Agricultural Research. is a reviewing editor for PNAS Nexus. He is named as one of 100 engineers of the Modern Era by AIChE, received the Charles D. Scott Award, and his team won the 2015 FDA Food Safety Challenge. He received the highest honor that Purdue University confers onto a faculty member, the Morrill Award.

The aims of Ladisch’s research and teaching are to discover and disseminate new knowledge on proteins at interfaces that will advance the translational science for injectable medicines, pathogen detection, bioseparations engineering, and transformation of renewable resources into biofuels and bioproducts. His goal is to provide an academic environment that enables a rigorous education in biological engineering while catalyzing development of leadership qualities for a diverse cross-section of students and scholars.

Dr. Ladisch has 40 years’ experience in research in biofuels, renewable resources, bioseparations, and biotechnology.  He has authored a graduate textbook (Bioseparations Engineering, Wiley, 2001), and co-authored an undergraduate textbook (Modern Biotechnology, Wiley, July, 2009), as well as numerous publications and patents.  He serves on the editorial boards of journals including Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Bioresource Technology, AIChE J., Enzyme and Microbial Technology, Industrial Biotechnology, Biotechnology Progress, Biotechnology for Biofuels, and J. Biological Engineering.

The American Institute of Chemical Engineers awarded him The Food, Pharmaceutical and Bioengineering Division Award, in 2001, and named him as one of The 100 Engineers of the Modern Era, in 2008.  He received The Marvin J. Johnson Award in Biochemical Technology, from The American Chemical Society, in 2002; the Paul Dana Biofuels Award in 2006, and The Agricultural Team (Biosensor Detection Team) and Outstanding Chemical Engineer Awards, at Purdue University, in 2006.  He received The Charles Scott Award of the Society of Industrial Microbiology, in 2009.  He was named  Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) in 1994, the ACS and AAAS in 2011, and the National Academy of Inventors, in 2013.   Dr. Ladisch was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1999.
