As players arrange and rearrange the wave pieces in order to open up the way to the Home Port they practice trial and error. Children also use spatial reasoning skills as they try to find and create patterns. With this game children can practice their critical and logical thinking by solving a problem set up in a fun, easy-to-understand context.

Engineering thinking and design practices the gift encourages children to do or learn about: Define a problem, make observations, learn about the problem, idea generation, plan a solution, try the solution, test the solution, analyze a solution, redesign a solution, make improvements to their solution, refine ideas, recognize patterns
