Pirates Jr. Hide & Seek

Lower Age: 6+
Price: $14.99
Year Added: 2016

Pirates Jr. Hide & Seek provides a game board, 4 playing pieces, and a booklet containing 60 challenges along with  their solutions. For convenient travel, the game board can be turned into a storage box for all of the game’s pieces. The goal of the game is to use the playing pieces to cover up all of the images on the game board except for the images displayed in the booklet for the challenge. Each challenge gets progressively more difficult to solve, which allows the user to continue to challenge themselves and keep the game interesting. This game encourages engineering thinking and design, because it provides the user with a problem to solve. Before engineers start working on a project, they need to brainstorm possible solutions to the problem and compare them to determine which one is the best fit. This puzzle game uses a similar concept, as the user must think about the solution, test it out, and continue trying until a solution works.

Engineering thinking and design practices the gift encourages children to do or learn about: Define a problem, make observations, generate ideas, plan the solution, try the solution, test the solution, analyze the solution, make improvements, recognize patterns

Engineering text or context explicitly provided by the gift: A problem, constraints, criteria

Additional practices and skills needed by engineers that were addressed by the gift: Spatial reasoning, critical thinking, problem solving
