Lunar Landing, by Thinkfun, is a logic game for children ages eight and up. The game includes 6 “explorer” tokens (5 Helper Bots and 1 Shuttle), 40 Challenge Cards, and a game board with a built-in tray for the Challenge Cards. All of the pieces can only move in straight lines up, down, left or right. In addition, they can only stop moving when they run into another piece or the edge of the game board. The goal of the game is to move the pieces such that the red Shuttle token moves to the Landing Grid in the center of the board.  Solving each challenge requires children to utilize observational skills and plan how to move the pieces to get the shuttle to the center.  Some of the challenge cards can be quite difficult, especially for younger children, so being able to persevere through challenges is an important skill in this game. This game is chiefly a puzzle for developing logical thinking skills, but it also promotes engineering thinking by encouraging players to define a problem and work within a set of constraints in their effort to find a solution.

Engineering thinking and design practices the gift encourages children to do or learn about: Define a problem, plan a solution, test the solution, recognize patterns, make improvements to the solution

Engineering text or context explicitly provided by the gift: A problem to be solved by introducing a new process, a client, criteria, and constraints

Additional practices and skills needed by engineers that were addressed by the gift:

Spatial reasoning skills, critical thinking, perseverance, problem solving

    • Feedback:

      • “This game is a puzzle game and it pushes you to think a lot about how to solve the problem. It's unlikely the solution will be found on the first try, so you must keep trying different ideas until you find the solution.”

      • “The toy inspires and requires the kind of iterative, logical thinking necessary in engineering.”

      • “Lunar Landing is a logic puzzle game that focuses on problem solving and critical thinking. I like that it helps build perseverance and problem solving skills, which are very valuable to engineers!”
