Kanoodle Duplexity

Lower Age: 8+
Price: $21.99
Year Added: 2018

Kanoodle Duplexity is a puzzle game by Educational Insights, intended for all ages eight and up. It’s part of the Kanoodle family of puzzles, and will be familiar to those that have played the other games. It’s different enough to stand on its own, however. The game includes a plastic storage case with a carry handle, the 100 two-sided puzzle cards, the 28 magnetic game pieces, and a multilingual (English, Spanish, French, and German) instruction booklet. The game is played by placing a card on the magnetic tabletop surface of the carrying case. Players are tasked with recreating the pattern of up to 7 colors using the pieces provided. It seems simple, but with only one copy of each pair of colors, the puzzles quickly become challenging.

In this game, pattern recognition, logic, and forethought are essential to successful puzzle-solving, and the game offers many chances to develop and practice those skills as players work through sequentially more difficult challenges. Iterative design and analysis are used in a big way when the first, second, or even third solution a player comes up with is somehow flawed and must be improved on. With 200 puzzles to get through, this gift will keep engineering skills sharp and entertain players on the longest car trips!

Engineering thinking and design practices the gift encourages children to do or learn about: Define a problem, idea generation, plan a solution, create a prototype or process, analyze a solution, make improvements to the solution, and recognize patterns

Engineering text or context explicitly provided by the gift: A problem to be solved, criteria, constraints

Additional practices and skills needed by engineers that were addressed by the gift: Spatial reasoning, evidence-based reasoning, problem solving, perseverance, logical thinking, iterative design
