Ghost Hunters

Lower Age: 6+
Price: $14.99
Year Added: 2016

Ghost Hunters is a single-player puzzle game for children ages six and up. Included is a game board that doubles as a travel case, as well as six transparent puzzle pieces, 30 cards with 60 different challenges, and a booklet which provides the game’s rules and solutions. The goal of the game (similar to the game  North Pole Expedition, also by SmartGames) is to position a challenge card on the game board, and then place the transparent flashlight pieces so that the ghosts are “lit up,” or able to be seen through the clear circles on the pieces. The challenges are split into four categories, from “easy” to “expert.” This gives children the opportunity to challenge themselves regardless of their skill level, and helps improve their spatial reasoning and critical thinking skills. This game helps children practice one of the core elements of any design process: working under constraints (in this case, the limited ways in which the pieces can be arranged on the game board) to create a solution to a problem.

Engineering thinking and design practices the gift encourages children to do or learn about: Define a problem, ask questions, make observations, generate ideas, plan the solution, try the solution, test the solution, analyze the solution, make improvements to the solution, learn about the problem, optimize the solution, recognize patterns

Engineering text or context explicitly provided by the gift: A problem, criteria, constraints

Additional practices and skills needed by engineers that were addressed by the gift:

Spatial reasoning, critical thinking, creative thinking, evidence based reasoning, design, problem solving
