The Harry Potter Kano Coding Kit is an interactive coding game for children ages five and up. The gift comes with a gyroscopic wand, two batteries and an instruction manual. The Coding Kit also utilizes an app that is compatible with most tablets.


Most of the gameplay for the kit comes through the app. Initially upon opening the box, the player will construct the wand by following the instruction manual to piece together the components. The manual also provides a short explanation of what purpose each of the components of the wand are, giving the player a basic understanding of how the wand itself functions. The app is used to present players with challenges that require the solution to be block coded with commands that will activate from wand motions.


The gift teaches the basics of coding through the connection of simple command blocks and, once the player is ready, allows the player to code the commands directly using Javascript. The app also has the option for players to view other coding solutions to various problems, providing a option to re-work based on what others have done.


This gift will teach the player the basics of coding logic and how to creatively solve problems in a coding environment. The app begins with walking the player through puzzles, teaching them how the different coding blocks can be used, and then slowly removes the direction until the player is coding on their own. The challenges allow for the player to iteratively test their code as well, running the environment and then resetting to see how their changes affect the problem. This is an excellent gift for children with an interest in beginner-level coding.
