Smart Circuits: Games and Gadgets Electronics Lab by SMARTLAB Toys is 50 experiments in one! This toy combines the fun of constructing with the unlimited possibilities of modern-day electronics. Smart Circuits comes with a guide book that walks users through 50 different projects starting with a simple LED circuit and ending with a fun sound reaction game. The main components of the kit include circuit elements like a power source (AAA batteries not included), pre-programmed microcontroller, LED arrays, push buttons, speakers, and much more. It also comes with a plastic grid and jumper wires to connect the circuit components together. The guide book has easy-to-follow visual instructions and descriptions of the role each component plays in the circuit. Children will have a blast constructing their own circuits and playing with their finished creation!

Smart Circuits is sure to bring the engineer out of any child by teaching them basic concepts that go into designing much of today’s technology. This toy invokes critical thinking about the physics at work inside a circuit while a child constructs it by hand. It also promotes computational thinking by showing how the microprocessor, a small computer, uses the input of the circuit to provide a certain output. Overall this toy is a good intro to engineering thinking and design and provides insight into some of the classwork electrical and computer engineering students complete at a university.

Engineering thinking and design practices the gift encourages children to do or learn about:

Test the solution, Analyze a solution

Engineering text or context explicitly provided by the gift:

A problem to be solved by developing a new or improved object, tool, or process, Criteria

Additional practices and skills needed by engineers that were addressed by the gift:

Critical thinking, Evidence-based reasoning
