The Let’s Go Code! Activity Set teaches children fives years and up some basic coding and programming concepts, such as algorithm development and sequential execution, without the aid of electronics. The set contains 20 foam maze mats, 20 double-sided coding cards, 2 die-cut robot pieces, 2 die-cut gear pieces, 2 die-cut spring pieces, 2 die-cut arrow pieces, and 2 die-cut X pieces. The game is intended for two players, which encourages children to  learn cooperatively. The first builds a “maze” with a start and finish point using the included foam mats, and places special tiles on the mats like springs, gears, and obstacles. The second player has to set up a series of “command tiles” (forward, turn left, turn right, pick up, or jump over), similar to a computer algorithm, for the first player to follow. The algorithm should successfully move them from their spot at the beginning of the maze to the robot tile places at the end of the maze, while collecting all the necessary springs and gears and avoiding obstacles. This gives children the chance to develop experience with programming concepts, computational thinking, logical thinking, and problem solving!

Engineering thinking and design practices the gift encourages children to do or learn about: Define a problem, plan a solution, try the solution, test the solution, redesign a solution, recognize patterns, communicate their solution, work in a team.

Engineering text or context explicitly provided by the gift: A problem to be solved by developing a new or improved object, tool, or process

Additional practices and skills needed by engineers that were addressed by the gift:

Coding, computational thinking, critical thinking, working collaboratively, problem solving, perseverance, logical thinking

      • “I like how you can play it for hours and not get bored. I like the colors of the pads.” F, 9
      • “I like that you can create a maze for a mouse and that you get to be the mouse in the game.” F, 6

    • Feedback:
      • “My kids cooperated for hours making and solving mazes. They (and I) had a lot of fun with the game. The quality of the components at different difficulties made it a great game!” parent of a 3-, 6-, and 9-year-old
      • I like how physical/tactile the game is. The large and colorful pieces make the game fun and exciting. I also love that you can adapt the game to play with one person or a number of people. My children would take turns making the puzzle/ coding/and "being the mouse.” They would play for hours creating different puzzles.” parent of a 3-, 6-, and 9-year-old
      • “We are always looking for games that are not on the computer. Having a game that practices coding without having to stare at a computer screen was so refreshing!” parent of a 6- and 9-year-old
