Kanoodle Extreme, by Educational Insights, is a puzzle game for children ages eight and up. It is a simple design, with the entire game consisting of just the box it comes in and 12 puzzle pieces; however, despite the simplicity, Kanoodle Extreme contains over 101 different puzzles of increasing complexity!
Kanoodle Extreme has three different types of puzzles: 2-D puzzles, 2-D sliding puzzles, and 3-D pyramid puzzles. The puzzles stem from arranging the game pieces into 2-D and 3-D patterns after initial constraints are imposed.
This toy does an excellent job at teaching the player how to think spatially, initially having the player simply fill in missing pieces to the completed board, then advancing the player to filling in only a portion of the board with specific pieces, and finally constructing 3-D pyramids using the pieces in different combinations. As challenges build off of each other they become more open ended forcing the player to plan their solution and iterate their design as they go, teaching them perseverance as the challenges progress. Overall, like the other games in the Kanoodle family, Kanoodle Extreme presents a stripped-down yet challenging set of puzzles for young users that teach several skills crucial to any engineering endeavor.
Engineering thinking and design practices the gift encourages children to do or learn about: Idea generation, plan a solution, and recognize patterns
Engineering text or context explicitly provided by the gift: A problem to be solved, Constraints
Additional practices and skills needed by engineers that were addressed by the gift: Spatial reasoning, Creative thinking, Problem solving, Perseverance, Logical Thinking
