This Is Not A Math Book is a Smart Art Activity Book for children, ages nine and up, made to show them how math and art can be used together to make beautiful creative works. With 96 pages full of colorful activities, this book provides a space for children to explore what makes math beautiful. Recommended materials for children to complete the different puzzles and challenges include a ruler, a protractor, a compass, tape, graph paper, plain paper, tracing paper, and scissors. With these various tools in their tool belt, children are tasked with solving challenges, completing patterns, and even creating their own puzzles! This book combines art and math in a unique, hands-on way in order to draw children into the overlap between the often separated disciplines. Children have a means to showcase their creativity by drawing and coloring beautiful shapes based on geometric and mathematic principles. Once they’ve completed some of the guided activities, they can use the blank pages in the back of the book to design new objects, shapes, and patterns based on the concepts learned and practiced on the previous pages. This is Not a Math Book encourages children to practice logical thinking skills, pattern recognition, spatial reasoning, and especially creative thinking, as it shows just how inaccurate some common stereotypes about mathematics can be.
