Look Inside:

Aspiring architects and budding builders will delight in the range of information, activities, and encouragement offered in Iggy Peck's Big Project Book for Amazing Architects. Through the context of architecture, children between the ages of five and seven are taken through different steps to design buildings for different people and purposes. In the book, opportunities to design are often presented as challenges, such as ‘build a home that could withstand a forest fire.’ There is also an explicit engineering challenge where kids are asked to gather materials from around their house to solve a problem. The book also prompts them to test and improve their designs after they create their first prototypes. In the different activities, they are continually encouraged to look at their own environment to find inspiration and to generate ideas. Along the way they learn about some of the greatest feats of engineering in history (i.e. the Great Pyramids at Giza, Stonehenge, and early skyscrapers.) Altogether, the book offers 96 pages of projects and activities that help introduce the engineering design process to children, with over 90 full-color illustrations to spark their imagination!

Engineering thinking and design practices the gift encourages children to do or learn about:

Make observations, idea generation, plan a solution, try the solution, create a prototype or process, refine ideas, recognize patterns, optimize their solution

Engineering text or context explicitly provided by the gift: Criteria

Additional practices and skills needed by engineers that were addressed by the gift: Spatial reasoning skills, creative thinking, design

      • “Has good exercises that promotes concepts in engineering, with a focus on architecture.”
      • “While this book is created for architects, it teaches engineering thinking and design by promoting creative thinking and design for many different kinds of projects.  Users get the opportunity to use their imagination to design new structures and then redesign as needed.”
