Engineered! Engineering Design at Work

Author: Shannon Hunt
Lower Age: 8+

Engineered! is a nonfiction book written by Shannon Hunt and illustrated by James Gulliver Hancock. Intended for audiences 8-12 years old (although older readers may enjoy it as well), it’s a collection of amazing feats of engineering and the stories behind them. The first few pages are dedicated to explaining the engineering design process in a way that anyone can understand and the rest of the book gives examples of that process in action across multiple engineering disciplines, like how aerospace engineers landed Curiosity on Mars or how geomatic engineers are helping to save caribou herds. It also includes a glossary should readers come across unfamiliar words.

Engineered walks children through not only the engineering feats themselves, but also the processes and principles that define a true success! Readers learn how every engineer must clearly define and understand a problem before they can come up with and test an idea to solve the problem, which they then must communicate to others. Engineered! is a great foundation to prepare readers for tackling whatever activities or projects they come across.

Engineering thinking and design practices the gift encourages children to do or learn about: Define a problem, Learn about the problem, idea generation, create a prototype or process, test the solution, make improvements to the solution, communicate a solution

Engineering text or context explicitly provided by the gift: NA

Additional practices and skills needed by engineers that were addressed by the gift: critical thinking, design, problem-solving
