Engineer THIS!: 10 Amazing Projects...

Lower Age: 9
Upper Age: 12
Price: $14.95
Year Added: 2017

Engineer THIS!: 10 Amazing Projects for Young Mechanical Engineers teaches children ages nine through twelve how to build different contraptions using the engineering design process. In the book, children will find ideas of projects to complete, with step-by-step instructions that encourage redesign and optimization. As they move through the projects in the book, children are instructed to define a problem, think up a solution, plan the solution, create it, and improve upon it. Many of the projects are very open-ended, and children are encouraged to use different materials and methods as they create their designs. The strength of the book is that, beyond simply showing children how to accomplish a finished project, it goes further to teach them about the science behind their projects, like how forces such as lift and drag affect a paper glider. As children work through the fun activities in the book they will gain an appreciation of different types of engineering careers and the engineering design process.

Engineering thinking and design practices the gift encourages children to do or learn about:

Learn about the problem, generate ideas, plan a solution, create a prototype, test and analyze the solution, make improvements to the solution

Engineering text or context explicitly provided by the gift: Problem(s) to be solved by developing a new process, criteria, constraints

Additional practices and skills needed by engineers that were addressed by the gift: NA
