Astro Girl, a picture book by Ken Wilson-Max, is intended for readers ages three and up. This book tells the story of a girl of color named Astrid that aspires to be an astronaut, just like her mom, and is mentally prepared for all the challenges that being an astronaut entails. Throughout the book, she is determined to accept the challenges and struggles of being in space. Her dad is a source of support for Astrid as he is encouraging her in facing the difficulties in space.
This toy promotes engineering thinking and design by illustrating the experiences of an astronaut and connecting them to Astrid’s everyday life as it addresses the responsibilities of in space operations and progressively works towards strengthening them. Astro Girl also promotes the ethical values of perseverance, resilience, and diversity in the STEM field as the main character is a woman of color.
