The Thinkrolls: Kings & Queens App mixes dragons, simple machines, princesses, physics, knights, and magic into challenging puzzles for children ages five and up. Available for download from the App Store, Google Play, or Amazon, children can use this app to work their way through a total of 228 puzzles spread out across 12 different castle settings. There are two difficulty levels, which allows children to grow and develop their skills over time. 115 of the puzzles are intended for children five years and up and the other 113 puzzles are intended for children eight years and older. In both levels children will come up against obstacles that must be moved to complete the task and unlock the next puzzle. Using different objects and following certain steps will allow players to successfully clear the obstacles. For example, one challenge prompts players to use a harp to lull a crocodile to sleep. Each challenge builds on the skills learned in previous levels so that players must think ahead to what comes next and use trial and error to troubleshoot their solutions. In this way, children can first test a solution and observe how it works in the puzzle. If they do not solve the puzzle on the first or second try, they are given the chance to redesign and try again. Overall, children learn how to use the kind of critical thinking and logical reasoning that engineers need in their everyday work!

Engineering thinking and design practices the gift encourages children to do or learn about:

Define a problem, make observations, idea generation, plan a solution, try the solution, make improvements to their solution, recognize patterns

Engineering text or context explicitly provided by the gift: A user

Additional practices and skills needed by engineers that were addressed by the gift: Spatial reasoning skills, creative thinking, problem solving, perseverance

    • Feedback:

      • “This app challenges kids to find a way to get a ball from the start of the course to the end. They use spatial reasoning skills and strategic planning to find a way to move the objects around to get the ball to the end gate. This teaches children skills that are useful to engineers.”

      • “This app is great for children to test what they think the solution is, to see if it works, and if it doesn't then to redesign and try again. Overall I think it really teaches the thinking process that engineers use very well!”
