The Everything Machine

Lower Age: 4+
Price: $2.99
Year Added: 2016

The Everything Machine, by Tinybop, is a block-based coding application on iOS, for children ages four and up. Unlike a lot of other coding applications for kids, The Everything Machine is not a game with specified levels or goals; instead, it’s a way for users to control the functions of their devices directly. The app works in conjunction with hardware such as the camera, microphone, and speakers, as well as the flashlight and light sensor, and allows the user to control them via various inputs and traditional logic constructs like “AND”, “OR”, “NOR”, or “NAND”.

Since the application is more of a tool than a game, the users that will get the most out of it are children already interested in coding or technology, but Tinybop has released some videos (on YouTube) to help novice programmers learn to use The Everything Machine’s block-based algorithm development.

The Everything Machine allows kids to use their phone to directly interact with the world around them, demonstrating the power of even simple hardware and software and teaching them about several of the many uses of programming in everyday life.
