Glitchspace is a single player computer game that traps players in a block-based world. In order to progress in the game, players must use programming concepts to manipulate the red blocks in the strange environment. Whenever a player scrolls over a red block, the game will open an interface where they can use different visually-represented programming commands to manipulate the blocks. There are many ways to manipulate the blocks, and players progressively open up more options as they advance through the game. Children have the chance to practice a variety of programming basics as they use critical and creative thinking to complete each level. The game promotes engineering thinking and design by giving the player the goal of solving each level by making it to a specified portal. To reach the portal, players must use their knowledge of programming and consider different solutions based on the constraints of the game. The player can use any of the programming codes they learned in the game, and the game allows for players to creatively use those codes in creative combinations. There is no one correct solution to complete each level. Instead, players can explore various solutions to make use of all the programming codes within their arsenal.

Engineering thinking and design practices the gift encourages children to do or learn about:

Define a problem, learn about the problem, ask questions, make observations, generate ideas, plan the solution, try the solution, test the solution, redesign the solution, make improvements to the solution, refine ideas, recognize patterns, apply science

Engineering text or context explicitly provided by the gift: A problem, criteria, constraints, a client, a user

Additional practices and skills needed by engineers that were addressed by the gift:

Spatial reasoning, coding, critical thinking, programming, evidence-based reasoning, design, problem solving
